Please check access and firing times before visiting sites, not all sites listed are on open access land. Firing ranges and boundaries of open access areas are marked on the OL28 OS Dartmoor Explorer map. Please stick to the country code and consider giving support to the numerous agencies that help to keep Dartmoor a fabulous natural and historic environment!

About the database listings: In all listings clicking on the photo or the site name will open a page for the site with a larger photo and further details from the database. The database now has over 6680 records covering nearly all publicly listed sites on Dartmoor including around 4800 round houses. This level of detail is of interest to archaeologists but tends to swamp listings of sites more likely to be of interest for walkers. For this reason, the listings default to around 550 core sites only. These are the stone circles, stone rows and the ring cairns listed by Turner. The default search radius is 2 km. The controls below the map can be used to start a new search by entering a 6- or 8-digit reference (without the prefix "SX"). The search radius can be specified and you can add incremental Display layers of detail on top of the core sites. If using a more detailed layer you will need to decrease the search radius to avoid getting hundreds of search results.

Core sites Default listing of core sites consisting of stone circles & rows and some of the major ring cairns.
Plus cairns adds approx. 1000 cairns and other minor sites not included in the core listings but excluding round houses.
Plus round houses adds approx. 4800 round houses.
Plus non-sites adds in the records for sites that no longer exist or are not prehistoric sites.
Plus duplicates adds records excluded as duplicates. Those maybe duplicate records in external listings (e.g. the Historic Environment Records). For example, some sites have been identified as cairns in some listings and interpreted as round houses in other listings and both records appear.

These listings have incorporated, matched up and merged all of the records from all of the major archaeological listings including: Worth, Grinsell, Turner, Butler, Bill Radcliffe, Sandy Gerrard, Megalithic Portal, the National Monument Records and the Historic Environment Records. The author would like to thank Bill, Sandy, the lovely people both at Megalithic Portal (especially Anne Tate who did an amazing job to link listings) and at ACE Archaeology for collaborative work over the years to synchronise and correct listings across the various websites which now interlink. A culmination of years of work the final merger of cairn records took 3 months of cross referencing in 2017 the result being a snapshot of the records at that time. This data has in turn been refined since by field work and research. The round house data was supplied by Sandy Gerrard. Grid references are in order of accuracy: from Google Earth satellite, if visible and found, from a Garmin GPS reading, if visited by the author and from the literature otherwise. Individual site pages will state the source of the grid reference and provide satellite imagery. If a site listing lacks a photo it has not yet been visited by the author in which case the grid reference is from the literature.

Currently the database only includes sites which can be represented by a grid reference. Reaves are not included as they require GIS shape technology which is beyond the current capability of this system. To see the sources for the records, look at the tables on the resources menu. The database listings can also be viewed on a Google map and downloaded as GPS datasets for Garmin devices.

Notes: "Oxford Archaeology carried out an excavation of an early Bronze Age barrow at Emmets Post, Dartmoor in advance of its destruction by quarrying. The investigation elucidated the sequence of construction of the monument, which comprised a primary turf mound and a central cairn that were subsequently buried beneath a larger secondary turf mound with a stone kerb. No human remains were found, although this is not unusual on Dartmoor, where unburnt bone does not survive due to acidity of the soil."

Notes: The Brisworthy circle underwent major reconstruction carried out by Breton and the Barrow Committee in 1909. At the time only 4 stones remained standing whilst another 21 were lying roughly in place. Some 15 stones out of 40 are missing, no doubt robbed for nearby enclosures and walls. A low rubble bank surrounds the circle which can be seen on LIDAR data. This is discussed in detail in the article 'Dartmoor Site: Brisworthy Stone Circle' linked above in this listing.

Notes: "This ring and stone row is now covered by china clay waste. A stone row and circle on top of a low ridge, between Tory Brook and a tributary of the Yealm, near Cholwich Town. The row, extending over 700ft, consisted of uprights 2-3ft. high and 3ft. apart, the circle, at the northern end of the row, was 15ft. in diameter with seven upright stones. The site was excavated in 1961, and the sockets of many missing stones were found, also a pit 8ft. in diameter in the centre of the circle." Notes: Butler Collard Tor 1. "Two stone rows each headed by a cairn lie on a gentle clitter-covered south-facing hillslope between 239m and 259m above OD. The rows which are oriented approximately north-south, diverge from their northern ends and are from 17m to 19 apart; a field bank interrupts the course of the east row. The precise lengths of the rows are difficult to determine partly because they appear to have been slighted and partly because of the presence of clitter and earthfast stones which hamper identification of the individual stones. The deduced lengths of these rows (excluding the cairns) are 75.4m and up to 97.2m respectively however because of the disturbed nature of each row these measurements are by no means certain. A count of the upright and clearly definable stones revealed 10 in the west row and 13 in the east row, but these figures provide a totally misleading picture of the somewhat jumbled and chaotic distribution of moorstones in each alignment. The heights of the uprights range from 0.3m to 0.9m with one very large damaged stone 1.3m high. Both cairns have been badly disturbed: the western mound is 8m across and 0.6m high and the eastern mound is 8.5 m across and 0.6m high". Lethbridge pp.55-7, diagram p.55.

Notes: Natural feature Hawk's Tor rock shelter - resembles tomb. "At the summit stands a rock shelter, v shaped in plan with a coverstone. Rowe referred to it as a cromlech. R. N. Worth called it a natural grouping of rocks. Mr. Beckerlegge on examining the coverstone, found a similar vein of quartz in the coverstone as in the rocks of the v shaped shelter, but running in a different direction. The coverstone must have been levered or swung in an anti-clockwise direction through an angle of 90 degrees to make a shelter of what was previously an opening between two vertical walls of rock". Site visited by the author and Sam on 16/06/2018. This particular slab has a cavity below it which is large enough for a dog to shelter in. On top of the slab is a thick layer which could represent remains of a cairn.

UPDATE 16/01/2019. This site is described as a "cooler" in Eric Hemery's High Dartmoor on p.21 photo 19. "A cupboard recess or chamber used for cool-storage of foodstuffs" (p.33). Notes: An intriguing structure consisting of two very large parallel slabs on Legis Tor. Site discovered by Lethbridge who suggests it might be an ossuary. This is quite clearly a man made structure. The two very large parallel slabs look very much like they are an artificial construction rather than natural. One end has a clearly built up wall to form a structure. There is one larger end slab, very small in comparison to the side slabs - but it rests on a bunch of other slabs that look very much like they have been artificially placed. This is undoubtedly a prehistoric construction - a large cist or "ossuary" (receptacle for burials or cremations - a sort of tomb). No entries in HER or NMR. see Lethbridge p.37 diagram and photo.

Butler, 1994: "barely visible circular enclosure .. its position on the ridge suggesting a large ring cairn rather than a domestic enclosure. The flat interior 35 m across, disturbed by a line of tinners' pits, is surrounded by a low bank no more than 0.1 m high supporting a few earthfast slabs"

Turner, 1990: "Stone ring 31.5 metres in diameter internally, with bank 0.7 metres wide and 0.15 metres high. A few upright stones still remain in the bank".

Newman, P. + Probert, S., 2005: This feature is now largely obscured by dense Molinia. Only a 35m section of slightly curving bank is visible between SX 5612 6591 and SX 5613 6588. None of the stones noted by the Ordnance Survey (1979) are in situ, there being just two clusters of three stones each. It seems unlikely that this could represent an embanked stone circle it seems more likely to be an ephemeral part of the surrounding medieval field system.

The current author has failed to find this feature on multiple occasions. Most recently on 9th April 2023. A follow up visit on 15th April 2023 has led to the conclusion that this site is perhaps better considered to be an enclosure or part of the surrounding medieval field system as suggested by Newman + Probert.

In the photo it is very difficult to make out the stones due to the long Molinia grass so I have ringed them in red. There are in fact two groups of three stones but I have ringed what I can see in the photo. The one furthest to the right is actually my rucksack sat on top of one stone that would not be visible otherwise. The stones circled in blue a little way in the distance are from the nearby Ringmoor Down Cairn Circle (also dubious as most stones not earthfast).

Butler himself debates whether the low bank represents an enclosure or a ring cairn. Lidar data available to a more modern perspective suggests not a circular feature but a rectangular enclosure. The following extract from Lidar shows that along with 3 of the tinners pits below.

To conclude in our view this is not a ring cairn. This record is being retained as this is a reported ring cairn that is part of both the Butler and Turner listings. However, the CairnClass classification has been changed from yes to No.

Notes: A hollowed-out cairn measuring 6.5m N to S by 6.4m and 0.9m high. There are no traces of a cist though some protruding stones on the E side may indicate the presence of a former kerb. A stone-lined hollow 2.5m in diameter and 0.6m deep lies in the centre of the mound and probably represents its reuse as a military training feature.

Notes: "A badly disturbed prehistoric cist with displaced cover stone and vestiges of a retaining circle surviving in situ. Only five slabs of the retaining circle survive approximately upright in situ, suggesting the overall diameter of the complete circle was 8.35m. The long slabs of the central cist are also in situ and the chamber measures 1.1m by 0.28m approximately by 0.3m deep. This ring cairn survives as a circular bank measuring up to 3.5 metres wide and 0.75 metres high which surrounds a flat interior up to 17.5 metres in diameter. There is evidence for partial early excavation or robbing on the south west side. Noted in 2019 as a possible 'sacred' pool.

The remains in this area are chaotic and disturbed by later interference. It is hard to make out the original stones of the nearby stone rows.

The satellite imagery does seem to bear out a circle of stones. The linked HER record refers to a diagram found in Butler Volume 3 p. 107 (diagram) that refers to an east to west "alignment?" of around 8 stones. This would appear to be the top half of what appears to be this reported stone circle. So, Butler thought there was a possible stone row here.

The southern part of the stone circle includes a gate which may have been stones imported at a later date.

In 1998 there was a report by Fletcher, M. + Probert, S., 1998, "Shaugh Moor, Devon: An Archaeological Survey".

It states: "Other large upright stones occur near the east row. Two substantial uprights used as gateposts may have been moved from elsewhere and there are two uprights nearby which Butler suggests may be the remains of a row which lies at 90 degrees to the east row. Surveyed at 1:200."

So, this looks like a stone circle. Butler and others thought the northern section could be a section of stone row.

This site is an enigma that is difficult to interpret.
