Useful Articles on Dartmoor

The listing that follows is from a database being compiled during research for this website. The listing is a bit eclectic and will expand over time, it is initially biased towards early articles from the pioneers of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee because they are readily available online through the Internet Archive and they are of historic interest. Many of these articles are from the Transactions and Reports of the Devonshire Association (T.D.A.), the Devonshire Association provide a listing of the volumes currently available online on their website, see Devonshire Association. A very comprehensive listing of very early, mostly nineteenth century, articles on Dartmoor can be found in J. Brooking Rowe's Third edition of Samuel Rowe's A Perambulation of the Antient and Royal Forest of Dartmoor, see Chapter XX. Dartmoor Literature. In 1905 in T.D.A Vol 31 Arthur Prowse produced An Index of References to Dartmoor and its Borders Contained in the "Transactions," Vols. I to XXX

There is a wealth of interesting information in the Barrow Committee Reports. There were sixty-nine Barrow Committee reports between 1879 and 1950 and these appear in T.D.A Vols 11-82 (excluding 25-27). These are mostly not included in the listings below but the Twenty-first Report by R.H. Worth, see below, contains useful tables that index all of the previous twenty reports. The 1978 article Dartmoor Barrows by L.V. Grinsell, see listing below, builds on the work of R.H. Worth and the Barrow Committee and has comprehensive tables with a bibliography.

A useful resource for searching for general articles relating to archaeology is the British and Irish Archaeological Bibliography.

The website Wikitree has very useful listings of journals in the UK. This includes links to scanned copies of annual publications of the various societies such as the Devonshire Association and the various archaeological societies.
